Crusing on home, almost

As I reported last night, Deanna did so well with her surgery, beyond our highest hopes and expectations, so well in fact, she never made it to PICU, went straight back to her room, and then the next morning, was discharged over to Ronald McDonald House, and then what to the tough do after brain surgery, Go shopping of course.

She was bound and determined to get to her craft stuff, which is her passion, so out to Michael's we went, and she filled up a basket, as she pretty much always does...
What a kid, oblivious to all around her, who might stare or point, or gasp, or whatever, there she was in her best flannel jammies, shopping away...  This kid is going to be fine, for sure.

This morning at 0730 or so, we headed ourselves back towards Florida, making major amendments to the previously planned 5 day leisurely paced trip home, since as we all know when Bette is within 750 miles, its time to be home, so Icompromised for a trip down to Jackson, Ms, well Pearl Ms to be exact, so I could get a ball and Pin from the Mississippi Braves, which is a team I've missed four or five times in the last three years, got it!

Then, I had learned that the Selma to Montgomery National Historical Trail had a new location and interpretive center in Selma, Alabama where the march started back in 1965, so we headed there.

We got to Selma at about 3:45, just before the Center closed at 4.  The Center was kind of a bust, in that all that was there was a few photos, and a video, which is the same one that they show at the Lowndes County Center.  I did get the stamp for this location though.  They didn't have a pin.
The Center is located just across from the Edmund Pettis Bridge, where the march started-  There were eventually about 25,000 people it was said.

About 20 miles down the road (US 80) is the Lowndes County Interpretive Center, which was the first location of the Trail. We got there at about 4:31- the center was supposed to close at 4:30, but they were still open, so I got my stamp there also.  They too didn't have any pins, there had just been a jubilee there, and they actually didn't have much of anything.

Just slightly down from the Lowndes Center is a roadside marker that marks the spot where Civil Rights Worker Viola Luizzo was gunned down by three KKK members almost to the day in 1965- (March 25th actually)  I always stop there to pay my respects.

We drove on through Montgomery and after a fuel stop, hurried on down to our spot for the night, Camp Wal Mart at Dothan Alabama.  Looks like we have about 300 miles in tomorrow to St Augustine.

We got word tonight that our New Jersey daughter may be facing surgery soon, she goes back to the Doctor on April 18th-  That would mean a car trip up to New Jersey and back.  Will keep you posted on that one.

Still planning on doing the quick Baseball trip in Florida when we get back, right after the season starts, I hope.
