Day 5- What an adventure! and change of plans 3

What a last night and today!  We did dodge the worst of the damaging winds and tornadic activity, but it still rained pretty steadily, and lots of nearby lightning strikes.  But all was well, even if we both didn't sleep super well.  Up at 0600, and ready to start the day.

I decided yesterday to do a loop trip from Corinth and take in several sites, which is what I wound up doing, while Bette kept herself busy and shopping at the Dollar Store...
Probably about 80 miles or so, and I was out about 3 hours. First stop was at Shiloh National Military Battlefield, which I had not been to before.  We had a notion to come when we were in Memphis last summer with Cooper and Dante, but passed on it.  This was a very beautiful spot- and it was a significant battle during the Civil War.

This was park #8 on the trip, and #114 overall.  I arrived at 9, and thought the VC and bookstore were deserted, turns out the Bookstore had had a power failure from the big storms last night, so the guy had left-  so I walked over to the VC, and the very nice Rangerette called him on his cell phone so he would come back.  To my surprise, there were 2 stamps at the VC, which I wasn't aware of- and then I went to the Bookstore and got 4 more stamps, and a pin.

From there, I headed a few miles up the road to the Tennessee River Museum on Main Street in Savannah, Tennessee.  There, I had a nice chat with the lol (little old lady) who was manning the museum, and got 2 stamps there.  And, she gave me a pin also, free!  Don't have a photo of the museum, but it is a very nice shop.

Then sort of an homage stop a few miles back down the road to Adamsville Tennessee, to the home and museum of Sheriff Buford T Pusser, the man whom the movie "Walking Tall" was about.  Sadly, the museum part was closed, so this photo will have to do:

Sadly, Sheriff (former Sheriff Pusser was killed in a car wreck in 1974- or was he murdered as retaliation?

Then, I headed back down to Corinth, to the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center- this is a beautiful building that serves as a scholarly place for the study of the war.  Got 4 stamps here, I think, and a pin.

Then, a very nice visit for 2 more stamps to the Corinth Visitor Center, and there, I got lots of travel information and a free pin also!  Score!!!

By now, it was about noon, so we headed up the road to the next planned stop, Jackson, Tennessee, so off we went... We stopped about 20 miles up the road at a Wal Mart and got Subway for lunch, and as usual, we'll have the other half for dinner.

We stopped in at Pringle's stadium at Jackson, and got a ball and pin.  The Generals are a first year club for Jackson, they formerly were the W. Tenn Diamond Jaxx.  They are the AA affilliate of the Seattle Mariners...

Their game for tonight was cancelled, because their tarp had been blown off the field last night, and the field was wet. The area had up to 70 mph winds last night, they said.

From then on, the day got a little interesting... We headed north from Jackson as the GPS directed, on highway 70 for a few miles, then ran into a sign that said no trucks, and then a little further, a big warning sign about a bridge out, and a clearance of 11 feet.  Well, this was a delimma, since we are 12"6 I think.  So we were stuck- or could take a right turn and take our chances.  That we did, and there starts the adventure.  The detour wound up being about a 10 mile diversion back on over to I-40, not the direction we wanted to go-  there was twisty-turny S curves, and tons of very apparent wind damage from the storms last night.  Clearly the road had been blocked, but at least, we were able to pass without incident, other than making Bette very nervous.  You could clearly see what appeared to be close to tornadic activity along the road for about a half mile.

We stopped just short of I-40, and looked at a paper map, and set a new route for ourselves, and headed off.  That resulted in our winding up where we are just now, at Camp Wal Mart at Paris, Tennessee.

Very quiet and comfortable here-  Tomorrow, we are planning on a short trip, a few miles up to Fort Donaldson National Military Park, in Dover Tenn., then we are scheduled to check into the Piney campground at Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky for two nights, and a rest.  They had lost their power this morning, and there is flooding in the area, but when I called this afternoon, they said they were ok.  Looking forward to getting a rest.

Then, we have to find someplace to stay for 3 days as our next stop is flooded out, and they called us and cancelled our reservation.  May stay at Piney if they let us and we like it, May head on over to Van Buren Missouri area, which is near where we were originally going, have to wait and see.

Keeping a minor weather eye out for storms tonight, undecided if they are or are not headed this way.
