Wednesday, June 1st US 50 The loneliest highway in the world- and Great Basin NP

It was warmer last night, so we slept in till 0730 or so...  Plan for the day was to head out to Great Basin National Park, which is in Nevada, just across the border, about 100 miles away...  Left about 0930.....

US Highway 50 is labeled as the "Loneliest Highway in the World,"  especially in the Nevada Part-  For our part, we went 85 miles between services, and then it was on the state line..  with a casino of course.....

As you can see, its pretty lonely... Don't guess we met up with 20 cars over the 100 miles....
That's actually a part of the Great Basin Park in the background there, Mt Wheeler.....

We "did" the park, it has 2 Visitors Centers for some reason, and we got a total of three stamps, plus a pin....  The Lehman Cave VC had a nice gift shop and restaurant, so we had a drink and Bette had some chips before we headed on back- didn't do the cave tour, Bette said she'd done  caves before....  Most of this park is wild area, great for hiking and backpacking...

This is park number 131....

On the way out, there was a "ranching" exhibit, and this old fellow was slowly rusting away in the desert:

That's a cow skull mounted on the seat.....  someone's idea of Western humor...

On the way out, we spotted what we thought was a tree with lots of squirrel nests in it.....

Or something... on the way back, a closer inspection revealed that those were shoes tied up in the tree!  I know of another "shoe tree" somewhere out West, but it was cut down by vandals recently... I'll have to research that and post about it... anyway, we didn't have any shoes to add....

Think there were about 50 pair or so in the tree!

When we got back to the park, we discovered we apparantly have a water leak underground at our water supply, so they asked us to hook up to the next space's supply- which solved right away the low water pressure problem we noticed....  suspect they'll come a digging after it dries out some....

Tomorrow is a rest day, might go to see the next town over, Fillmore- named after the late President.....  the first almost State Capitol is there....

Beautiful weather today, about 79 but very windy, and the sands are blowing around, it's a little hazy out....
