1. Jean Ribault Monument Marker   Inscription. Here stood Charlesfort, built 1562 by Jean Ribault for Admiral Coligny. A Refuge for Hugunenots and to the glory of France. Erected 1925 by the Government of the United States of America to mark the first stronghold of France on this Continent. Erected 1925. Location. 32° 18.371′ N, 80° 40.535′ W. Marker is in Parris Island, South Carolina, in Beaufort County. Marker is on Belleau Wood Road.  Located on the Paris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Belleau Wood Road, east of the Circle. Jean Ribault Monument Marker   Despite what the marker says, the site it marks is NOT the location of Charlesfort. It is actually the location of Santa Elena, a Spanish fort. The location of Charlesfort is about 100 yards to the north of the monument. Charlesfort, however, was the first French settlement in the United States. It was also the first settlement from any nation that was founded as a haven for religious persecution.
