May 24th The St Francis Street Tour St Augustine's Oldest House, The Gonzalez-Alvarez House 14 St Francis Street

This one was a bonus, I missed it in the planning-  It is also a National Register of Historic Places Listing, and is shared with the State of Florida Historical Society also

Gonzalez-Alvarez House

(The Oldest House)

For more than three centuries this site has been occupied by St. Augustinians. Beginning about 1650, a succession of thatched wooden structures were their homes. This coquina stone house was built soon after the English burned St. Augustine in 1702, and originally was a one-story rectangle with two rooms. As times changed during the Spanish, British and American occupations, a wooden second story, an off-street porch, and other features were added. Preserved by St. Augustine Historical Society since 1918, the house became a registered national landmark in 1970.

Sponsored by the St. Johns County Historical Commission in cooperation with the Department of State  F-311-1986

The Oldest House
Our featured attraction, the González-Alvarez House is the oldest surviving Spanish Colonial dwelling in Florida. The site has been occupied since the 1600s and the present house dates to the early 1700s. Since 1893 visitors have toured the house to see evidence of the Spanish, British and American occupations of St. Augustine and to learn how the residents lived. In 1970 the U.S. Department of the Interior designated the house a National Historic Landmark.
