Carolina, United
States. The
population was 389 at the 2000 census.
Demographics
As of the census[1] of 2000, there
were 389 people, 153 households, and 104 families residing in the town. The population density was 465.5 people per square mile
(178.8/km²). There were 164 housing units at an average density of 196.3 per
square mile (75.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 50.39% White, 45.24% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.77% from other races, and 2.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.54% of the population.
There were 153
households out of which 26.1% had children under the age of 18 living with
them, 43.8% were married
couples living
together, 20.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0%
were non-families. 28.8% of all households were made up of individuals and
11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average
household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town the
population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24,
23.7% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or
older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 103.7
males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 males.
The median
income for a household in the town was $27,083, and the median income for a
family was $34,000. Males had a median income of $32,031 versus $19,250 for
females. The per capita income for the town was $18,864. About 20.8%
of families and 30.4% of the population were below the poverty
line, including
48.0% of those under age 18 and 28.6% of those age 65 or over.
