April 27th National Register of Historic Places Sunnyside Greenwood SC

Had never been here, didn't know about it.

"Sunnyside"
is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This exquisite home, which has been operated as a bed and breakfast, is situated on four beautifully landscaped acres and features three large porches for relaxing and socializing. Sunnyside is an appropriate name for this amazing property with large windows bringing light into all of the rooms.

Beautifully restored, this lovely home could become your personal retreat or resume operation as a Bed & Breakfast. The house has been updated with modern amenities while maintaining its historic charm. The last major renovation took place in the 1980’s when central heat and air were updated and the house wired for cable service.

A cozy kitchen has been remodeled into a U-shape that allows for ease of movement and creates a great place for company to gather. The gas stove and cooktop includes a grill, perfect for making mounds of pancakes or French toasts for your guests. A breakfast nook in the kitchen is banked by a row of windows overlooking the beautifully landscaped gardens.

Sunnyside has 5 bedrooms and 3 ½ baths in its 4,675 square feet. Three of the bedrooms and two baths are upstairs along with an additional storage room that could be easily converted into an office. The upstairs landing area is spacious and opens onto the upstairs balcony which overlooks the formal landscaping and fountain at the front of the home.

The two downstairs bedrooms are large with soaring ceilings and functioning fireplaces. The original heart pine floors remain throughout the house. One of the most intriguing features of this historic home are the names carved into one of the window panes in the formal dining room by the children of the original owner. This etching is on one of the remaining original panes of wavy glass and is dated 1850. Central heat and air conditioning provide year round comfort.

Sitting on four acres of land, the gardens around the house are beautifully landscaped. As you wander further into the grounds, you are canopied by old oaks that surround well maintained grassy areas for play. A charming gazebo is tucked into one of these nooks where in true southern style you can sit and sip a mint julep.

According to the National Register of Historic Places, Sunnyside is an unusual example of a blend of the Gothic Revival and Greek Revival styles of architecture. Historically the house has been associated with several locally prominent individuals, who have made substantial contributions to their community.

Built in 1848 by Robert Gillam, Sunnyside is a one-and-one-half story house with flush board siding covering the front façade and weatherboard siding covering the remainder of the house. It features a gabled roof and dormers with scalloped bargeboard. Greek Revival elements include the portico covering the front façade and the heavy proportions of the interior details. There are two compound interior chimneys located on each front gable end of the house and one large interior chimney located in the central rear section of the house.

Sunnyside was originally built with a T-shaped floor plan. In 1906, Harry L. Watson, editor and publisher of Greenwood’s newspaper, purchased the house. At this time Watson also was Chairman of the Board of Greenwood Public Schools, a Trustee of Furman University, President of the South Carolina Press Association, and the President of Greenwood’s National Loan and Exchange Bank. Tradition states that Sunnyside was named for and modeled after the home of Washington Irving in Tarrytown, New York. It was listed in the National Register November 14, 1978.

In addition to the main house, the original smokehouse and outhouse remain on the property along with a large new shop. The new structure could easily be converted into a large space for entertaining or even an additional apartment.

Conveniently located only three blocks from historic downtown Greenwood, South Carolina and less than a mile from Self Memorial Hospital. Sunnyside is also just moments away from Lake Greenwood that offers 212 miles of shoreline and 11,400 acres of boating and fishing opportunities year-round.

The city of Greenville, SC is only 55 miles to the north, Columbia, SC (the state capital) is just 78 miles down the road and Myrtle Beach, SC is an easy 4 hour drive away.
