Day trip to Baxter State Park and environs

After the fishing trip yesterday, Steve, Elliott and I took a ride up to the Baxter State Park area

Up and back, about 120 miles of totally back/dirt/gravel roads, totally in the wilderness. Saw our Moose from the previous post, and went to several places that Steve had been to as a boy and teenager.  This was formerly big time lumbering/logging part of the state back since the late 1800's until about 1930 or so, and they still log the area.  Steve showed me how they connected the river and lake systems up there to get the logs down to Bangor or Augusta.

Since these are private roads, there are no rules, I saw 12 foot wide logging trucks so overloaded as to be completely illegal back in Florida-  Steve said they regularly run 200,000 pounds and over up here-  Wonder the bridges don't burst!!

Saw tons of beautiful scenery, waterfalls, lakes, hikers, went to the trailhead for the Appalachian Trail at Mount Khadatin, the northern origination point for the trail.  Saw lots of young hikers-

Can't find the file where I put the photos!
