Today was sort of a "free" day, since we are staying over another day due to the Labor Day holiday, so I figured out I would make a dash for a couple of units in Gateway, and then try for Sagamore Hill, which was the home of Theodore Roosevelt.
Turns out I even added a couple of other stops---
First went to Breezy Point NY, which is out by Kennedy Airport, and stopped in at Floyd Bennett Field, which was an old Navy Base, and the first commercial airport for NYC.
This is the new Visitor's Center for Floyd Bennett, and it is not marked at all how to get there, I missed it the first try, then sort of drove where I shouldn't have to get to it- Got 4/5 stamps there- thought there would be more to see, but wasn't a lot actually.
From there, I headed on over to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Preserve VC, and got my stamps there.
I was through with these two stops by just after 10 am, so I hustled on over to Oyster Bay, LI, and got to Sagamore Hill- the house is closed for renovations, which I knew, but I got stamps at the two locations, the Visitors Center and the Museum, which is one of the children's former personal residence on the grounds.
Here is what the museum looked like:
So now, it was just around 1 pm, so I decided to add Fire Island National Seashore to the mix, and I called around to determine which of the several locations was closest/easiest to get to, and settled in on the Fire Island Lighthouse.
Got 2 stamps and pins and postcards here-
Then, I thought I might make a stop at Coney Island and try to get a ball and pin for the Brooklyn Cyclones, but couldn't raise anybody there, so I passed on that.
Made a last stop for the day at the Great Kills portion of Gateway NRA on Staten Island on the way back, but the darn office was closed- "staffing problems" they said over the phone.
Anyway, got 11 stamps, several pins, and visits to 2 new parks today, for a new total of 230/397.
Taking tomorrow off- working on trip planning/execution for the Metro DC area, resting, and Bette will do laundry, and play with her Hickory Corner Friends.
Tomorrow is the first day of classes for Lander, so that will increase my "busyness" a bit.
Looking forward to 3 days or so in the Metro DC area- plan to finish that area pretty much off.
