Well, it turns out the old water heater was on its last legs, after all, it was 15 years old. It kept leaking and was somewhat corroded, so we just pulled the plug and got a new one, its a 40 gal compared to the 30 gal, and supposed to be much more effecient. Life goes on!
Update: The one they bought turned out to be defective, it filled all up with water in the top, and we were fortunate Bob didn't get electrocuted! We had to go back to HD and get a replacement, which they did without question, but we had to pay Bob an additional installation charge- helping the local economy...... It's all good though.
