New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park

Today, we went to downtown New Bedford, which at one time was the center of the whaling industry in New England, and led it to be one of the wealthiest cities of the day. Later on, textiles took over, and then in the 60's they went belly up, and the town sort of dried up. It is trying to make a comeback, there is a big fishing industry, but the locals were all grumbling about the government restricting their ablility to harvest scallops, cod, and other delicacies of the ocean around.
The area is actually a big historical district, made up of several city blocks of buildings, and also includes the waterfront as part of it. The docents were terrific. We walked around for a couple of hours, and then went uptown to eat at a very good local diner. We found a couple of very cool gift shops, and made three purchases, two for gifts, and one for us. Then over to a fairly big antique mall, and found a basket that Bette liked, purchase made. Got back to the coach at about 2:30, a good day.
