Casco Island Mailboat Cruise

Got up early (0800) this morning, and then left at 9 for Portland to take the three hour Casco Island Mailboat ferry ride to 6 stops out in Casco Bay, off of Portland. The weather started out overcast and windy, but turned out to be a beautiful day for sailing. There were several "locals" on the boat, you can tell them by the little carts they have, taking their groceries or food, or whatnot, over to their homes. Several people were on their way to a birthday party, several grandkids were on the way to see grandparents, and lots of folks were traveling to see their dads on Father's day. The trip took a little over three hours, and included a quick meal stop at Cliff Island. We got a neat boat for the boat collection during a layover stop at Chebeauge Island.

The first big boat of the season was in port today, bringing along a thousand or so folks to help the Portland economy. This was a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, I believe.

One of the islands on our stop- most of the islands are fairly primitive, use only golf carts go get around, and range in size from 75 acres to over 2000 acres, we were told.

Another island stop. They used to take "thousands" of folks to summer homes here each summer back before the war, when folks did that sort of thing. Today, the full time residencies are down, but lots of folks come up for the summer. We had originally planned to go to a festival on one of the islands, Peak Island, but the planned events didn't look so good, so we opted for the mailboat cruise instead, which we hadn't taken before.
Tomorrow will be an off day/laundry day.
