Haunting memories
On the way to Columbia today, we passed the 93 mile marker, which for me will always have a memory- not a happy one. On July 25, 2000 6 members of the Odom family, and a foreign exchange student who was also traveling with them that day, were on the way to the beach, when a truck crossed the median and slammed into their van, killing them. The truck driver also died , meaning that 8 folks lost their lives in that accident. Two members of the Odom family and one other exchange student survived the accident. Of all the shrines I've seen on the highways, this is the highest fatality count that I have seen, although when I was in about the 4th or 5th grade, 11 people were killed in a single accident just below my house in California, before the days that folks put shrines in. We actually passed several other shrines today, seems that Highway 34 in Newberry County SC and the stretch of 1-26 between Newberry and Columbia are very deadly stretches of roads. On a happier note, we did get the taxes dropped off today, and picked up a fan for a special delivery for our pals in St. Augustine. We also stopped by Boat Tech and got to see our old friend John, and he very generously provided me with a fishing rig for the St Augustine pier. Then we got home and started to pack and edit for our trip back to Florida. Hoping to leave by not later than 16 March.
