The Portsmouth Naval Prison, seen on the cruise

On our cruise, we came across the old Portsmouth Naval Prison, which was closed in the late 1970's but was also an active Marine Corps base until 1987. It is called appropriately enough the Castle. Up to 8000 prisoners were kept here, dating from the days of the Spanish American War.
Its a shame that the Feds have allowed the buildings to
basically rot in the sun. There has been talk of renovations, but nothing yet. Hope one day this facility can be saved.
