We learned that the USS Albacore was dry docked at Portsmouth NH, so off we went. Found it, and it turned out to be a terrific display. The sub itself never saw warfare, and never fired a shot in anger. It had a 50 person crew. I've been on subs before, but had forgotten how small things are.
Here are the boys at the main controls. They have left a surprising amount of gear at the sub. It is very realistic for the boys to sit at the actual controls.
Here they are at the sonar controls, and once again, lots of gear for them to play at.
Here they are in the bunks. Some of the bunks were so cramped I had no idea how a man could comfortably sleep in them. There were valves and pipes in the way. And this was a 1970's sub, not one of the wartime ones!
