Got back from the Neuroligist today, after having had a "nerve conduction test." This is the first of those I've had, not too gruesome a test, if you don't mind being shocked electricially to the point your legs jump three inches, or being acupunctured without the benefit of anesthesia, but I managed to weather the test.
Conclusions are somewhat unclear, but that is more of a product of the fact that my Doctor is a native Chinese, and isn't very clear on just what the situation is, but as I gather, the tests confirmed what we already knew, that over the last five years, I have had withering of the nerves/resulting atrophy of the muscles in my left leg. That's the "bad" news. The "other" news is that while I've lost essentially the use of about oh, say 50% of the power in the leg, (bad for golf), and the damage is, well, done (bad enough to earn me a handicapped plate and sticker), the body, being the wonderful machine that it is, has learned to fairly well compensate for the issues, except for the part where it is slow to send messages up and down the spinal cord re balance and strength, which is why I'm sort of wobbly and tend to fall down from time to time if not very careful, and remember to lead with my right leg and push off from my right side.
For the third time in three doctors, I heard that I need to loose weight, and also that I need to do strengthening exercises. Ok, Ok, I get it.
I was discussing this with the Kingstons tonight when they came over for Jeopardy, and likened myself to the guys on Biggest Loser, in that it seems you will just have to do a lifestyle change as far as exercise is concerned, and further, do it through the pain and inconvenience. Rationalize it any way you like, it has more to do with getting off the couch and walking, golfing, hitting the indoor pool for water aerobics, hitting the free gym they have here, or joining one nearby, (I've heard at my morning coffee club that there are lots around that cater to um er seniors for not much money.... So, we're adding this to our new resolutions list.
Not that I'm going to start doing 6 hours a day in the gym like the biggest loser types, and lose 278 pounds in six months, but I did lose 80 pounds in about six months once before when I went into police work, primarily by walking, so we'll see.
Not ready to post photos, measurements, and such, but suffice it to say I'm the heaviest I've ever been, have the largest waist size ever, and need to loose according to main primary care Dr, at least 60-70 pounds. So there it is.
