June 30th South Portland Maine

Set out a moderate agenda, and it was a totally beautiful day-

First up was the Civil War Memorial-  got that as stop 1.
Then over to something called the site of the former schools marker Evidently there were school buildings here from 1670 to 1976.  It's now a park as you can see.

Next was a visit to the Southern Maine Community College Campus, which is beautifully sited-  No pin, and didn't like the t shirt-

There were supposed to be several markers on campus, but I couldn't get around, and there was lots of construction and not much parking .

There were 2 lighthouses here, and I was able to clear up a bit of a mystery-

I had been to the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse before, with Cooper-  Its at the top right corner of the photo-

What I wasn't aware of was that there is also the Portland Breakwater light, or "Bug Light" about 3/10ths of a mile away.  Beautiful setting in a park.

I also got stamps for the Cape Elizabeth 2 lights here, in addition to getting them at Portland Head light museum.

For Spring Point Ledge Light:

There were lots of ships in the harbor today, this is a previous shot.

View of Portland city across the bay-

Next, the "Bug Light"  It was in its own little park, and a beautiful setting as well.  Right on the water!

Then, it was on down to Fort Washington Park, the setting for the much photographed Portland Head Light.  Fort Washington was a military fortification for like 5 wars, last used as a coastal defense operation during WWII.

Then, on down to the "Two Lights", which is the Cape Elizabeth lights, there are two right next to each other-  Can't tour them, but I did see them and get stamps for both.

First, the "main" one

And it's neighbor, the West one:

I was also able to get a stamp for the Halfway Rock Light, which is not to be seen:Have to catch this one on a boat sailing I reckon.

Then, it was off to Scarborough,

Made a quick stop at Spurwink Church,  a Nat Register property wonderful old country church:

Then, I sort of changed up the schedule a bit- stopped in at the Dollar Tree and Marden's to shop a bit, and then discovered there was a Wal Mart in Biddeford on the way home, so I stopped and got groceries.

All done and back in by 230!  Wonderful day.

Tomorrow is calling for another rainy day - may have to punt on plans
