In 1936, L. Phillip Clarke designed the Martin County Courthouse with funds from the Works Progress Administration. Symbols and inscriptions of the idealistic Roosevelt era are present in cast friezes and cornices. In 1989, the building was saved from the wrecking ball. The Martin County Council for the Arts was created featuring a gallery that rotates fine arts exhibits. The new courthouse sits directly behind the historic structure located at 80 East Ocean Boulevard in Stuart
