Along the way, we made a planned stop for a revisit to Russell Cave National Monument, in northern Alabama, about 40 miles away.
Cooper and I visited here last summer on our baseball trip home, and explored the cave, really neat. This was home some 10,000 years ago to Native American folk who stayed in the caves in the winter. Very interesting story and exhibits, and a nice film here also. Got 4 stamps, 2 new ones, a 50th Anniversary of the Caves being a monument, and a 25th Annniversary of Passport program stamp also.
From there, we headed on over to Corinth, all on highway 72, which is an Interstate like 4 lane for all of its 260 miles, except for a few patches when it is the main street for Huntsville and a couple of other towns. Nice easy drive though.
Here's what Mr Garmin said for the day:
Total Miles: 244.7
Overall avg: 41.3 mph (too many red lights)
Moving Avg: 50.8 The Interstate stretches made up
Max speed 68.0 Down a big hill
Total Travel time today: 5:56
Total Moving time: 4:48
Total Stopped 42
We found the Wal Mart at Corinth to stay the night boondocked, and as I checked in at the service desk, they warned me about very bad weather on the way.... "Maybe 6 inches of rain." Well, maybe not that much is on the way, but there is some nasty weather out there for sure:
We're just over the state line, west of Huntsville and north of Tupelo... the red square is for severe thunderstorms, I think... Looks like it may be heading our way, just depends on how fast it moves, and if it goes up the valley. Not sure if this is the same system that smacked St Louis a day or so ago, think it's a different one. We'll keep a weather eye out, for sure.
Here's our site for the night, all comfy.... just hoping the winds don't get ugly.
Tomorrow is kind of up in the air some. We picked up a day on the schedule, and also learned today that our accomodation plan for 29 April 2 May is now kaput, so we have several days to play with... Got to figure out what to do. For now, in the morning, I'll take the car and do the Corinth Battlefield NP, and maybe drive up to Shiloh also and back, if the weather is dicey. Then we were planning to go to Jackson Ms. for a ballfield visit, then to Paris Tn., for a visit to the Eiffel tower replica, then to Ft Donalson Tn NP, the on to Land Between the Lakes, Ky. May split that up now, depending on weather and the visits, might stop in Jackson, cause there are some other things to see there.... We have reservations for Land Between the Lakes, and not sure they can be altered, so we'll have to add a day somewhere before we get there.
Motor home seems to be fine, we're worried about leaking perhaps if it rains a lot, but we stuffed rags in the place we know the water is coming in, to see if that is still active or not.
The boys got back safely from Florida and spring break, so that was good to hear. Guess they have just over a month more of school now...
