This buggy is one of the "nicer" ones, note the running lights, which are powered by battery, and the rear view mirrors. Also had nice rubber tires. One learns quickly about the presence of buggies on the road by noticing the piles of ahem, road apples on the street.
You really have to be careful driving out here, the buggies go slow, and there are lots of hills. It matches the pace of life here, for sure. Notice the restricted line of sight up the hill in the bottom photo- We were going about 3 miles an hour when Bette took the shot. The bottom buggy doesn't have the orange triangle, either.
I used to help AP Ramage plow his fields in South Carolina, but it was nothing like this- this is farming dedication for sure, and the skill level is amazing. The pure Amish shun all "conveniences", which includes engine driven tractors. The horses are prized, and the Amish pay top dollar- lots of former thorobreds are used for buggie horses, we were told. We were up early this morning and headed over to Berlin, OH to join up with our pals Dan and Kippy Kingston, and we'll spend the day touring, and then head up to Niagra Falls, NY tomorrow morning. Just as we pulled into the campground, they decided to tar and coat the entire campground with gravel..... yuck.
